Abstract A 51-year-old male, previously diagnosed with central diabetes insipidus due to lymphocytic hypophysitis, presented with fever and dyspnea for 1 week. On arrival, he exhibited hypotension (85/60 mmHg) and sinus tachycardia (110 bpm). His electrocardiogram revealed mild ST elevation on V2–V4. Echocardiography indicated a near-normal (50%) left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), although the inferior wall of the left ventricle exhibited severe hypokinesis. Fulminant myocarditis and cir...

Abstract Background Delirium is a common adverse event observed in patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU). However, the prognostic value of delirium and its determinants have not been thoroughly investigated in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). Methods We investigated consecutive 408 patients with AHF admitted to the ICU. Delirium was diagnosed using the Confusion Assessment Method for ICU tool and evaluated every 8 hours during patients’ ICU stay. Results Delirium occurred in ...

Abstract Background Heart failure (HF) is a hypercatabolic state that promotes branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) catabolic activity in the heart and skeletal muscle and reduces protein synthesis in the liver. Consequently, plasma free aromatic amino acids (AAAs) are increased. We investigated the prognostic value of the BCAA/AAA ratio (Fischer’s ratio, FR) in patients with HF. Methods We enrolled 157 consecutive patients hospitalized for worsening HF (81 men, 76 women; mean ± SD age 75 ± 14 years...

Objectives Information on the relationship between myocardial damage assessed by myocardial scintigraphy and prognosis in patients with Anderson–Fabry disease (AFD) is lacking. We therefore aimed to investigate the prognostic impacts of myocardial thallium-201 (201Tl) and iodine-123 beta-methyl 15-para-iodophenyl 3(R, S)-methylpentadecanoic acid (123I-BMIPP) dual scintigraphy in patients with AFD.

Background Although liver dysfunction is one of the common complications in patients with acute heart failure (AHF), no integrated marker has been defined. The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score has recently been proposed as a novel, clinically-applicable scoring system for liver dysfunction. We investigated the utility of the ALBI score in patients with AHF compared to that for a preexisting liver dysfunction score, the Model of End-Stage Liver Disease Excluding prothrombin time (MELD XI) score. Me...

Abstract Background The LHFRS is a simple score derived from three factors (history of hypertension, history of coronary artery disease/myocardial infarction, and red blood cell distribution width) deployed for the risk stratification of AHF in Greek population. This study aimed to validate the Larissa Heart Failure Risk Score (LHFRS) in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) in a Japanese population. Methods We performed post-hoc analysis of 1670 consecutive patients enrolled in the REALITY-AH...
