ABSTRACT The polysaccharide capsule of Streptococcus pneumoniae is required for nasopharyngeal colonization and for invasive disease in the lungs, blood, and meninges. In murine schistosomiasis, immunopathology and cytokine production in response to parasite eggs are uneven and strain dependent. The magnitude of immunopathology and pro-inflammatory cytokine production in murine Schistosoma mansoni infection is strain-dependent.
