Legacy information systems consume a large portion of information technology budgets and often impose serious limitations on organizations’ flexibility and innovation. Despite the extensive literature on how organizations adopt and use new IS, we know little about how organizations discontinue their legacy IS. Current studies suggest some actions and events to cease mechanisms such as legitimization, learning, and routinization that give continuity to the systems. However, we do not know when th...

We analyze how data characteristics can influence value realization. Many studies on data- driven value realization characterize data as universal and de-contextualized resources that are similar a...

We study how a European postal service organization (LogiCo) tried to create and appropriate value from big data. Our analysis uncovers four tensions shaping this process: 1) Using existing data versus finding data elsewhere; 2) Thin versus thick processing of data; 3) Self-analytics versus analytics service, and 4) Ex-ante versus ex-post proof of data value. We discuss how these tensions may have emerged by looking at the nature of the data and see three characteristics playing a role: granular...

Abstract Big data has been considered to be a breakthrough technological development over recent years. Notwithstanding, we have as yet limited understanding of how organizations translate its potential into actual social and economic value. We conduct an in-depth systematic review of IS literature on the topic and identify six debates central to how organizations realize value from big data, at different levels of analysis. Based on this review, we identify two socio-technical features of big d...

Further to sharing their knowledge and information, organizations in a VO can also benefit from sharing and even combining/consolidating their Business Processes (BPs) in order to save costs, apply their best practices, and provide value-added services. A number of challenges are associated with the needed environment for BP consolidation. Our approach to tackle these challenges is two-fold. First part is addressed in this paper and deals with the human and procedural aspects of this problem and...
To cope with technological, economic and institutional changes, organizations need to innovate their business models (BM) by both developing new BMs and reducing their reliance on troubled BMs. While the development of new BM has been discussed in the literature, little systematic studied have examined how firms deal with the challenges arising from their troubled existing business models (unlearning BM). Based on two longitudinal case studies, we propose a process model that that constitute fou...

Big data analytics (BDA) has gained significant impetus as a breakthrough technological development. Yet, systematic empirical evidence on how organizations transform BDA opportunities into economic or social values is scattered in the literature. Therefore, we performed a systematic literature review to examine: How do organizations actualize the value potentials of BDA? The study contributes to the accumulation of scientific evidence on six contested organizational dynamics at work-practice, o...

Organizations are confronted with increasing levels of IS complexity. The socio-technical nature of IS implies that IS complexity stems from not only the structure of technology (e.g., how many elements and relations), but also from the subjective perceptions organizational actors have regarding technology. Research on IS complexity focuses mostly on the structural dimension and less on the subjective dimension. To understand the subjective dimension better, we examine the heterogeneity of frame...
