This paper examines whether a firm’s financial performance (FP) is associated with superior environmental, social and governance (ESG) scores in emerging markets of multinationals in Latin America. The study addresses the current research gap on this issue; it develops hypotheses and tests them by applying linear regressions with a data panel drawn from the Thomson Reuters Eikon™ database to analyse data on 104 multinationals from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru between 2011 and 2015. This paper argues that MNEs operating in developing regions can enhance their ...

This study aims to show that the effectiveness of corporate governance in improving firms’ environmental sustainability depends on the national institutional context. Using a sample of 210 firms from 14 countries in North America and Europe, our findings show that regulatory pressures discourage independent directors and separate board chairs to promote environmental sustainability whereas normative pressures have the opposite effect for these two governance mechanisms. We also found a positive ...

Multinational enterprises face numerous challenges due to the difficulties of operating in various markets and the usual cultural differences between the countries. As opposed to local firms, multinational firms are usually exposed to global pressure groups both in home and host countries. In addition, in order to gain license to operate in foreign markets, they are required to be regarded as socially responsible agents that contribute to sustainable development. Finally, apart from the moral re...
