Abstract Self-supporting thin films of 116,118Sn isotopes have been fabricated using ultra-high vacuum (UHV) facility at the Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi. Owing to the requirements for fusion and quasi-elastic backscattering studies, several self-supporting thin target films with areal density ∼ 250-600 μg/cm2 were fabricated. Attempts were also made to prepare thin films by cold rolling technique, and an areal density of ∼ 1.8 mg/cm2 could be achieved after several roll...

Abstract The isotopically enriched T 130 e targets of ∼ 1.2 m g / c m 2 thickness were fabricated on 4–6 m g / c m 2 gold ( A u ) backing. The vapor deposition method was employed using the resistive heating technique. To minimize the material consumption and increase the deposition efficiency, an indigenously developed graphite crucible with 1 mm opening was used to deposit T 130 e metal powder at a minimum source to substrate distance of 2 cm. A heat shield was placed at 1 cm above the graphit...

Abstract Stable isotopic iodine targets were fabricated using potassium iodide (KI) compound on gold and lead backings and used in a heavy ion induced in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy experiment. Due to the hygroscopic nature of iodide compounds, a very thin gold capping was used to protect the targets from getting hydrated. The mechanical, chemical and thermal stability of these targets was tested. The KI target on gold backing was found more stable compared to other iodide targets. In order to deter...

Abstract Sandwiched 142 , 150 Nd targets of thickness ( ∼ 100– 150 μ g /cm 2 ) have been fabricated between two carbon layers of different thickness ( ∼ 30 μ g /cm 2 and ∼ 10 μ g /cm 2 ) using the thermal evaporation technique in the diffusion pump based coating unit at the target lab of Inter University Accelerator Center (IUAC), New Delhi. Thickness and purity measurement of the targets have been confirmed by using the Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) technique and energy dispersiv...

Abstract Thin 130 Te target foils of thickness 139- 260 μ g /cm 2 have been prepared on 12 C backing using resistive evaporation technique for sub-barrier fusion studies in heavy-ion induced nuclear reactions. The deposition thickness of both 12 C and 130 Te has been measured using profilometer, and the thickness of a few target foils has been measured using α -transmission method. Target foils fabricated in the present work have been characterized using the Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometr...

Abstract For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive study has been carried out to investigate the effects of ion beam on erbium thin films. Thin enriched erbium films with areal density ∼50–200 μg/cm2 sandwiched between carbon films were prepared using the high vacuum deposition technique. The samples were bombarded with fluorine ion beam accelerated to 90 MeV energy using a tandem accelerator. Irradiation time was varied for each sample. Accelerator based characterization...

Several methods are available to track the intraseasonal oscillation, namely the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and monsoon intraseasonal oscillation (MISO). However, no methods to track both the modes in a uniform framework for real-time application exist. A new method to track the smooth propagation of the MJO and MISO is proposed to use it for real-time monitoring. The new approach is based on extended empirical orthogonal function (EEOF) analysis of the combined field of meridionally averag...

Abstract To perform nuclear reaction experiments at HIRA, IUAC, New Delhi, thin (100–150 μg/cm2) and pure 61,62Ni targets of uniform thickness are required. Self supporting targets are preferable for such case but, instead, carbon-backed isotopic targets are fabricated by adapting physical vapour deposition technique as it was comparatively more stable and consistent. Around 25 thin targets of both 61,62Ni isotopes are prepared using the limited amount of available enriched target material (less...
