The development of materials that are non-magnetic in the bulk but exhibit two-dimensional (2D) magnetism at the surface is at the core of spintronics applications. Here, we present the valence-fluctuating material EuIr2Si2, where in contrast to its non-magnetic bulk, the Si-terminated surface reveals controllable 2D ferromagnetism. Application of the Luttinger theorem to the Kondo lattice YbRh2Si2 suggests that its large 4f-derived Fermi surface (FS) in the paramagnetic (PM) regime should be similar in shape and volume to that of the divalent local-moment antiferromagnet (AFM) EuRh2Si2 in its PM regime. We present the crystal growth as well as the structural, chemical and physical chracterization of SmRh2Si2 single crystals. Their ground state is antiferromagnetic, as indicated by the behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat at the second order phase transition observed at TN = 64 K. We present thermopower measurements on Yb(\(\hbox {Rh}_{1-x}\hbox {Co}_x\))\(_2\hbox {Si}_2\). Upon cobalt substitution, the Kondo temperature is decreasing and the single large thermopower minimum observed for \(\hbox {YbRh}_2\hbox {Si}_2\) splits into two minima. Simultaneously, the absolute thermopower values are strongly reduced due to a weaker exchange coupling between the 4f and the conduction electron states with increasing x.
