Purpose To address the increasingly turbulent environments that businesses face, the purpose of this study is to build on prior research to propose a comprehensive model aimed at enhancing business school education in Latin America. Design/methodology/approach The authors modified and adapted prior meta-analytic research on workplace training programs to create a model that is applicable to the context of business school education in Latin America. Findings The creation of this model enabled the...

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of networks on research output and impact. The analysis was done using a database of 2150 Mexican engineers who have been members of the National System of Researchers. Results show that although there are several methods to measure centrality and structure in the social network analysis theory, not all variables show the same impact on performance. Our results suggest that the centrality measures that show a positive effect on publications and...

Considering that modern science is conducted primarily through a network of collaborators who organize themselves around key researchers, this research develops and tests a characterization and assessment method that recognizes the particular endogenous, or self-organizing characteristics of research groups. Instead of establishing an ad-hoc unit of analysis and assuming an unspecified network structure, the proposed method uses knowledge footprints, based on backward citations, to measure and c...

Abstract This article analyzes the determinants of annual installed capacity of photovoltaic power (PV) at a country level. Our results suggest that in the 15 countries studied, the factors promoting the deployment of PV systems are the net consumption of renewable electricity, the existence of a feed-in tariff and sustainable building requirements, as well as the quantity of scientific publications. Meanwhile, the variables that negatively impact the PV deployment are oil reserves and the carbo...

This paper analyzes science productivity for nine developing countries. Results show that these nations are reducing their science gap, with R&D investments and scientific impact growing at more than double the rate of the developed world. But this “catching up” hides a very uneven picture among these nations, especially on what they are able to generate in terms of impact and output relative to their levels of investment and available resources. Moreover, unlike what one might expect, it is cle...

Nations consider R&D a fundamental way to spur business innovation, increase the international competitiveness of domestic firms, achieve higher levels of economic growth, and increase the social welfare of its citizens. The empirical evidence indicates that, in the Latin America region, investment in R&D is comparatively low, largely depends on public funds, and is highly concentrated in academic research with limited business applications. Empirical evidence suggests a lack of connection in th...

Despite ongoing interest in deploying information and communication technologies (ICTs) for sustainable development, their use in climate change adaptation remains understudied. Based on the integration of adaptation theory and the existing literature on the use of ICTs in development, we present an analytical model for conceptualizing the contribution of existing ICTs to adaptation, and a framework for evaluating ICT success. We apply the framework to four case studies of ICTs in use for early ...

This paper provides useful insights for the design of networks that promote research productivity. The results suggest that the different dimensions of social capital affect scientific performance differently depending on the area of knowledge. Overall, dense networks negatively affect the creation of new knowledge. In addition, the analysis shows that a division of labor in academia, in the sense of interdisciplinary research, increases the productivity of researchers. It is also found that the...

This paper aims to further our understanding of how embeddedness affects the research output and impact of scientists. The analysis uses an extensive panel data that allows an analysis of within person variation over time. It explores the simultaneous effects of different dimensions of network embeddedness over time at individual level. These include the establishment of direct ties, the strengths of these ties, as well as the density, structural holes, centrality, and cross-disciplinary links. ...
