Abstract Reimbursements linked to performance have encouraged health systems to implement hospital-to-home transitional care services that improve patient experience and reduce the risk of avoidable hospital readmissions. Previous work indicates the potential for community health workers and peer coaches serving as patient navigators to improve patient experience and health outcomes, but have not been rigorously tested to improve hospital-to-home transitions in minority serving institutions. The...

Abstract Cytochrome P450s are part of a super-gene family that has undergone gene duplication, divergence, over-expression and, in some cases, loss of function. One such case is the 91-R and 91-C strains of common origin, in Drosophila melanogaster , whereby 91-R (DDT resistant strain) overexpresses Cyp4p1 and Cyp4p2 and both genes are lost in 91-C (DDT susceptible strain). In this study, we used a comparative approach to demonstrate that transcription of Cyp4p1 and Cyp4p2 were constitutively up...

Abstract While insecticide resistance presents a challenge for those intent on controlling insect populations, these challenges have also generated a set of tools that can be used to ask fundamental biological questions about that resistance. Numerous species of insects have evolved resistance to multiple classes of insecticides. Each one of these species and their respective resistant populations represent a potential tool for understanding the molecular basis of the evolution of resistance. Ho...

ABSTRACTThis study measured the knowledge transfer and appeal of information and communication technologies (ICTs) used to deliver education for sustainable development (ESD) content to farmers in Niger experiencing major crop losses from the insect pest Maruca vitrata. ICT-ESD content consisted of two dialectically localized and animated videos that address food security problems of cowpea insect herbivory and the shortage of integrated pest management strategies in rural Niger. Comparing pre-t...

While the United Nations Millennium Declaration identified several key benchmarks for sustainable development, the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (ASD) now reaffirms, refines, and retools those sustainable development goals for the next 15 years. Specifically, the ASD calls for developing and extending opportunities for transitions to sustainable societies—a goal that necessarily includes more sustainable research practices capable of fostering the uptake of the values, behaviors, ...

The legume pod borer Maruca vitrata Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is a pantropical insect pest of legumes. In West Africa M. vitrata is the most devastating insect pest of cowpea, a food crop providing much-needed, inexpensive protein to farmers and consumers. Various approaches to controlling this pest have been tried, including cultural management, host plant resistance and use of synthetic and botanical pesticides, all with limited success. In this review we present information on the di...
