[Et4N]2[MoIVO(mnt)2] (mnt = maleonitriledithiolate) reacts, as a synthon, with Me3SiCN under an acidic medium to produce the square complex [Et4N]4[Mo4(μ-CN)4(mnt)8] (1) in high yield. Complex 1 shows strong antiferromagnetic interactions between adjacent Mo atoms in the cluster. The presence of redox-active mnt as a capping ligand strongly influences the magnetic property of 1. The physicochemical properties of 1 have been rationalized by density functional theory level of calculations.

Abstract Synthesis of phosphonodithioato complexes of Mo(IV) and W(IV) bis- dithiolene have been reported. A super reduced Fe4S4 cluster with a sulfur based radical, [NBu4]4[Fe3IIIFeII(μ3-S)4(mnt)36−(mnt)1−˙]4−˙, (1) (mnt, maleonitrile dithiolate) which evolves H2S gas on treatment with acid under ambient conditions has been synthesized and structurally characterized.
