•The paper provides a review of the literature on the determinants of wage differences between small and large firms.•The technological choices of firms are at the same time the explanation and the result of wage differentials.•The increasing levels of income inequality are influenced by the capital intensive direction of technological change.•The paper explores the implications of the results to understanding the dynamics of income inequality.

In this paper, we discuss the state of the art in research and policy making related to the dynamics of financing innovation, highlighting gaps in the literature and setting up the objectives of this Special Issue. We also provide a discussion of methodological issues and future directions for the stream of studies aiming at the evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of policies to finance innovation. Finally, we discuss how the articles in this collection contribute to improve our understan...

We use survey data for 4336 scientific teams, located in 16 countries, where all members were working within a single lab, to test three context factors that potentially affect the capability of internationally mobile individuals to enhance the innovation performance of their research units. We formulate hypotheses on context factors rooted in the knowledge recombination and learning†by hiring theories. The results show that three context factors are positively associated with international mo...

ABSTRACTKnowledge composition, Jacobs externalities and innovation performance in European regions. Regional Studies. This paper analyses the role of the composition of the regional stock of knowledge in explaining innovation performance. It provides three main contributions. First, it investigates the relevance of Jacobs knowledge externalities in characterizing the technological capabilities at the regional level. Second, it applies the Hidalgo–Hausmann (HH) methodology to analyze knowledge co...

The paper analyses the recent evolution of international markets for technology by examining changes in ownership of US granted patents. We study the effects of the geographical origin of patents, proxied by their first priority country, on the probability of patents being traded, on the timing of the transaction and on the probability of observing a cross-border transaction, while controlling for the characteristics of the patents, the time and sector specificities. The analyses are based on a ...

In this paper, we study the determinants of the spread charged by banks under a UK policy intervention scheme, aimed at supporting access to the credit market for small firms through guarantee backed loans. We exploit a unique dataset containing data on 29,266 guarantee backed loans under the UK SFLG scheme over the period 2000 to 2005. Results suggest that lower spreads are offered for loans of larger amounts and higher durations, for service firms, for larger firms, and for those located in th...

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine, for a sample of ten corporations in three industries (i.e. automotive suppliers, semiconductors, and computer networks), the different strategies that firms undertake when acquiring patent-protected technologies. In particular, the authors analyze and compare two alternative channels for patent acquisition: markets for technology (MFT) and merger and acquisition (M&A) processes. Design/methodology/approach The authors implement two types of analys...

Although scientists are highly internationally mobile, it is not always clear if mobility is beneficial, and if so, in what circumstances. Our GlobSci project, which surveyed 17,852 scientists working in 16 countries ([ 1 ][1]), allowed us to examine outcomes related to mobility across a wide array
