Abstract The flat-slab subduction model has been proposed to explain the complex Mesozoic–Cenozoic geotectonic record of SE China as part of the Western Pacific margin. Here we investigate the post-250 Ma thermal history of the Shaoguan-Longnan region to evaluate the time-temperature evolution of local sedimentary and magmatic rocks in the context of the flat-subduction model. Our multi-chronological approach includes zircon U-Pb geochronology, 40Ar/39Ar dating of K-feldspar and biotite, (U-Th)/...

Abstract The petrogenesis of Neoproterozoic igneous rocks at the northwestern margin of the Yangtze Block and their tectonic setting are controversial. Here we present whole–rock major and trace elements and Nd–Hf isotopic data for felsic volcanic rocks from the Bikou Group. These ca. 820–810 Ma volcanic rocks consist of dacite and rhyolite with SiO 2 ranging from 64.4 to 77.0 wt.%. Most rocks show decreasing P 2 O 5 with increasing SiO 2 and Th and have I–type granite affinities (metaluminous v...

Abstract High–MgO basaltic lavas, including komatiites and picrites, have long been used as probes of both the chemical and thermal evolution of the mantle through time. The ca. 825 Ma Yiyang high–MgO basalts in the central South China Block (SCB) were considered to be the first evidence for >1500 °C mantle melts by a Rodinian mantle plume. However, later studies proposed that they may have been generated within an arc setting and can be classified as boninites. Here we present a comprehensive O...

Abstract Numerous Triassic biotite granites and two-mica granites crop out in the interior of South China, and some of them possess high U contents, which have been regarded as the sources for later hydrothermal mineralization. Their petrogenesis is therefore crucial for constraining the possible origins of the U enrichment. Here we report new LA-ICPMS zircon U Pb ages, mineral geochemistry of biotite and muscovite, whole rock geochemical results and Sr Nd and zircon Hf isotope data from the Jin...

Abstract Antarctica contains continental fragments of Australian, Indian and African affinities, and is one of the key elements in the reconstruction of Nuna, Rodinia and Gondwana. The Bunger Hills region in East Antarctica is widely interpreted as a remnant of the Mesoproterozoic Albany–Fraser Orogen, which formed during collision between the West Australian and Mawson cratons and is linked with the assembly of Rodinia. Previous studies have suggested that several generations of mafic dyke suit...

Abstract Strongly peraluminous granites are characterized by high A/CNK values (>1.1) and are important for understanding the regional tectonic regime. Here, we present integrated studies of zircon U–Pb ages, trace elements and Lu–Hf isotopes, whole-rock major and trace elements, and Nd isotope compositions for the newly discovered Nage granite porphyry in southeastern Guizhou Province. The porphyry has a crystallization age of 852 ± 5 Ma and shows wide ranges in SiO2 (64.5–72.51 wt%) and Al2O3 ...

Abstract This paper presents relatively high-resolution geochemical records spanning the past 4000 cal yr BP obtained from the lacustrine sediments of Poyang Lake in central China. The variations in the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) are traced using the K/Na, Ti/Na, Al/K, kaolinite/illite and clay/feldspar ratios, together with the chemical index of alteration (CIA), as indicators of chemical weathering. During the last 4000 years, the proxy records of chemical weathering fro...

Abstract The late Mesozoic igneous province in southeast China provides an excellent opportunity to understand the processes that controlled the growth and evolution of Phanerozoic continental crust. Here we report petrological, whole-rock geochemical and isotopic data, and in situ zircon U–Pb–Lu–Hf isotopic data from granitoids and associated gabbros in the Pingtan and Tong'an complexes, southeast China. Through combining the new results with published datasets in southeast China, we show that ...

Abstract Potassic magmatism is commonly linked to post-/late-orogenic environments, such as foundering or convection thinning of continental lithosphere. Their petrogenesis is crucial for constraining the chemical and physical properties of the remnant sub-continental lithospheric mantle. Here we report new SHRIMP zircon U–Pb ages, whole rock geochemical results and Sr–Nd and zircon Hf isotope data from four potassic plutons (the Da'an, Yingcheng, Zixi and Honggong plutons) in the northern Wuyi ...
