BACKGROUND: Muscle wasting, prevalent in hemodialysis (HD) patients diagnosed with protein energy wasting, represents an assessment challenge in the outpatient HD setting. Quadriceps muscle thickness (QMT) and cross-sectional area (CSA) assessment by ultrasound (US) is a potential surrogate measure for muscle wasting. We aimed to determine the validity of US to measure QMT and CSA against the gold standard, computed tomography (CT). METHODS: Twenty-six HD patients underwent US and CT scans on th...

The association between dietary patterns and health outcomes, such as quality of life (QOL), in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients with certain racial backgrounds has not been studied in detail. QOL is a powerful outcome measure in which dietary patterns could be a modifying factor. This study is a secondary analysis examining the association between dietary patterns and health outcomes in 101 African American (AA) maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients participating in the Palm Tocotrieno...

Objective Studies investigating the health effects of prolonged intermittent fasting during Ramadan among Muslim patients on hemodialysis (HD) are limited and reported heterogeneous findings. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of intermittent fasting during Ramadan on nutritional and functional status of patients on maintenance HD. Design and Methods This was a 12-week, multicenter, prospective observational study. The study setting included three HD centers. Adult Muslim patients, who wer...

Objective This study aimed to (i) determine habitual dietary patterns of Malaysian patients on hemodialysis (HD) and (ii) examine their association with nutritional status. Methods An a posteriori approach examined 3-day dietary recalls of 382 multiethnic Malaysian patients on HD, leading to short-listing of 31 food groups. Dietary patterns were derived through principal component analysis. Sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics together with nutritional parameters were examined for asso...

We conducted this cross-sectional population study with a healthy multi-ethnic urban population (n = 577) in Malaysia, combining nutritional assessments with cardiometabolic biomarkers defined by lipid, atherogenic lipoproteins, inflammation and insulin resistance. We found diametrically opposing associations of carbohydrate (246·6 ± 57·7 g, 54·3 ± 6·5%-TEI) and fat (total = 64·5 ± 19·8 g, 31·6 ± 5·5%-TEI; saturated fat = 14·1 ± 2·7%-TEI) intakes as regards waist circumference, HDL-C, blood pres...

The period of Ramadan (R) is associated with dramatic changes in eating habits involving extended periods of fasting on a daily basis. The current study assessed whether lipids and lipoproteins were impacted during R in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients. Forty-five subjects in an outpatient dialysis clinic in Saudi Arabia were evaluated for anthropometric and lipid changes on a monthly basis before, during as well as one and two months after R. In addition to routine biochemical measures, anthr...

Addressing obesity and improving the diets of populations requires a comprehensive societal response. The need for broad-based action has led to a focus on accountability of the key factors that influence food environments, including the food and beverage industry. This paper describes the Business Impact Assessment—Obesity and population-level nutrition (BIA-Obesity) tool and process for benchmarking food and beverage company policies and practices related to obesity and population-level nutrit...

Abstract Objectives The aims of this study were threefold: first, to assess the dietary fatty acid (FA) intake and blood FA status in Malaysian patients on hemodialysis (HD); second, to examine the association between dietary FA intakes and blood FA profiles in patients on HD; and third, to determine whether blood FAs could serve as a biomarker of dietary fat intake quality in these patients. Methods Using 3 d of dietary records, FA intakes of 333 recruited patients were calculated using a food ...
