Abstract Background Exposure of blood to polyanionic artificial surfaces, for example, during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), induces a highly procoagulant condition requiring strong anticoagulation. Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is currently used during CPB but can lead to serious bleeding complications or development of a hypercoagulable state culminating in life-threatening thrombosis, highlighting the need for safer antithrombotics. Ixodes ricinus contact phase inhibitor (Ir-CPI) is a protein e...

Abstract Transcatheter therapies to treat mitral regurgitation are rapidly developing. Currently, there are several devices commercially available to treat mitral regurgitation. The underlying cause of mitral regurgitation and specific anatomical aspects of the mitral valve and surrounding structures are considered when patients with symptomatic severe mitral regurgitation for transcatheter mitral valve therapies are selected. Multimodality imaging plays an important central role in the selectio...

The functional integrity of the endothelium is essential for vascular health. In addition to maintaining a delicate balance between vasodilation and vasoconstriction, the endothelium has numerous other complex roles involved in the maintenance of vascular homeostasis. Chronic exposure to cardiovascular risk factors and oxidative stress results in an imbalance in these functions, creating an environment that favors reduced vasodilation and a proinflammatory and prothrombic state. The involvement ...

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is defined by the presence of left ventricular or biventricular dilatation and systolic dysfunction in the absence of abnormal loading conditions or coronary artery disease sufficient to explain these changes. This is a heterogeneous disease frequently having a genetic background. Imaging is important for the diagnosis, the prognostic assessment and for guiding therapy. A multimodality imaging approach provides a comprehensive evaluation of all the issues related to ...
