Magnetic resonance (MR) T1 and T2* mapping allows quantification of liver relaxation times for non-invasive characterization of diffuse liver disease. We hypothesized that liver relaxation times are not only influenced by liver fibrosis, inflammation and fat, but also by air in liver segments adjacent to the lung – especially in MR imaging at 3T. A total of 161 study participants were recruited, while 6 patients had to be excluded due to claustrophobia or technically uninterpretable MR elastogra...

OBJECTIVES To investigate differences in chest computed tomography (CT) and chest radiographs (CXRs) of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) between renal transplant recipients (RTRs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients. METHODS From 2005 to 2012, 84 patients with PJP (RTR n = 24; HIV n = 60) were included in this retrospective multicentre study. Written informed consent was obtained. CT scans and CXRs were recorded within 2 weeks after the onset of symptoms. PJP diagnosis...
Objectives: The objective of this study is to assess the performance of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system (INTACT system) for the automatic classification of high-resolution computed tomography images into 4 radiological diagnostic categories and to compare this with the performance of radiologists on the same task. Materials and Methods: For the comparison, a total of 105 cases of pulmonary fibrosis were studied (54 cases of nonspecific interstitial pneumonia and 51 cases of usual interst...

The assessment of pulmonary congestion remains one of the more difficult routine tasks in chest radiology, and there are few publications concerning signs of pulmonary oedema on computed tomography (CT).

Abstract Purpose To show that both susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) and T2*-mapping are dependent on liver steatosis, which should be taken into account when using these parameters to grade liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Methods In this prospective study, a total of 174 patients without focal liver disease underwent multiparametric MRI at 3 T including SWI, T1- and T2* mapping, proton density fat fraction (PDFF) quantification and MR elastography. SWI, T2* and T1 were measured in the liver (...

The ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT recently released a new clinical practice guideline (ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT2018) for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) with simultaneously proposed diagnostic criteria by the Fleischner Society. [1, 2] Both diagnostic algorithms agree on most diagnostic steps, with divergent recommendations on the position of surgical lung biopsy (SLB): ATS/ERS/JRS/ALAT2018 recommends SLB in most patients with probable usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern on high-resolution computed tomogr...

Purpose Digital low-dosage, linear slot scanning radiography (Lodox®) is an imaging modality that can emit down to one-tenth the radiation of conventional X-ray systems. We prospectively evaluated Lodox® as a diagnostic imaging modality in patients with ureterolithiasis.
A case of survived drowning is presented where CT findings of the lungs were in keeping with several findings seen on post-mortem CT (PMCT) examination after fatal drowning. These findings include interlobular septal thickening, peribronichal cuffing, mosaic pattern ground glass opacities, and perivascular nodular ground glass opacities. The absence of confounding normal post-mortem changes allows for a discussion on subtle differences between findings related to aspiration and pulmonary edema a...

Early and accurate diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) is crucial for making treatment decisions, but can be challenging even for experienced radiologists. The diagnostic procedure is based on the detection and recognition of the different ILD pathologies in thoracic CT scans, yet their manifestation often appears similar. In this study, we propose the use of a deep purely convolutional neural network for the semantic segmentation of ILD patterns, as the basic component of a computer ...
