Abstract Background Treatment with non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) such as dabigatran (a direct thrombin inhibitor) or rivaroxaban (a direct inhibitor of factor [F] Xa) attenuates atherosclerotic plaque progression in hypercholesterolemic mice. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of NOACs application on the expression of coagulation proteins in loco within aortic stenotic valves and in valve interstitial cells (VICs) from patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). Methods Primar...

Data concerning the impact of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) on the thromboelastography (TEG) indices in venousthromboembolism (VTE) patients are limited. The goal of this study was to compare the impact of DOACs on clot properties measured in whole blood using TEG kaolin test and in plasma obtained from real-life VTE patients. We assessed 53 patients, including 20 on rivaroxaban, 20 on apixaban, and 13 on dabigatran. Using the TEG(R) 5000, coagulation status was evaluated in whole blood sam...

Background: Elevated plasma lactate levels correlate with high mortality rate in acute pulmonary embolism (PE) patients. We hypothesized that elevated lactate levels correlate with prothrombotic fibrin clot properties and enhanced neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation in acute PE. Methods: As many as 126 normotensive acute PE patients (aged 58 ± 14 years) were enrolled. Plasma fibrin clot permeability (Ks), clot lysis time (CLT), endogenous thrombin potential (ETP), citrullinated histone...

Objective: We investigated the knowledge about atrial fibrillation (AF) and oral anticoagulants (OACs) in AF patients scheduled for cardiac surgery compared with nonsurgical AF patients. Methods: We recruited 144 consecutive patients with documented AF scheduled for cardiac surgery on admission (aged 68.9±8.4, male 60.4 %). The control group represented 200 age- and sex-matched AF patients without indications for surgery. Using the validated Jessa AF Knowledge Questionnaire (JAKQ), we tested the...

Abstract Introduction Atrial fibrillation (AF), a risk factor for strokes and systemic thromboembolisms, is associated with unfavorable fibrin clot properties and increased thrombus formation in peripheral blood. The left atrial appendage (LAA) is known to be the primary site of thrombus formation. Aim We investigated the relative differences in plasma fibrin clot features including plasma fibrin clot permeability (Ks) and clot lysis time (CLT) between the right atrium (RA), right ventricle (RV)...

BACKGROUND: Anticoagulant therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) increases the risk of minor bleeding, which is mostly accepted by patients. We aimed to assess whether continuation of anticoagulation despite minor bleeding is associated with a higher level of knowledge on AF and anticoagulation. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 1525 patients with AF on oral anticoagulation who completed the Jessa AF Knowledge Questionnaire (JAKQ) (median age: 72 years [range, 65-79 years]; men: 54.6%), persist...

Aims. Fibrin formation and histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) are involved in primary hemostasis and wound healing. Little is known regarding the relationship of clot characteristics, bleeding time, and wound healing. Methods and Results. We studied 154 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and 154 subjects free of CAD matched for age, obesity, and current smoking. We evaluated bleeding time (BT) using standardized skin incisions on a forearm, along with plasma clot permeability ( s), clot ...
