Abstract Introduction The use of statins in non-selected type 1 diabetes (T1D) populations is low. We assessed the prevalence and factors associated with statin treatment in patients meeting criteria for this therapy for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Material and Methods From 2015 to 2018, T1D patients from a tertiary hospital were selected. Inclusion criteria were: ≥40 years-old, diabetic nephropathy, or T1D duration ≥10 years with ≥1 cardiovascular risk factor (CVRF). A s...

Purpose The activity of stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1) is increased in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) inhibit SCD1, but clinical studies on whether all dietary PUFA species are equal in SCD1 inhibition are scarce. Serum phospholipids are an objective proxy of dietary intake of plant-derived PUFA (C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3) and marine-derived PUFA (C20:5n-3, C22:6n-3). In 355 participants with primary dyslipidemia, we cross-sectionally investigated whethe...

Nut consumption lowers blood cholesterol and is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease, but effects on blood pressure (BP) are inconsistent. We assessed the 2-year effects of a walnut diet ...

Randomized controlled trials on diet and shortening of leukocyte telomere length (LTL) mostly focus on marine-derived n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). Walnuts are a sustainable source of n-3 PUFA. We investigated whether inclusion of walnuts (15% of energy) in the diet for 2 years would maintain LTL in cognitively healthy elders (63–79 years old) compared to a control group (habitual diet, abstaining from walnuts). This opportunistic sub-study was conducted within the Walnuts and Healthy ...
